Tell me, writes Mary Oliver in her poem, “The Summer Day,” What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?
It’s a question full of energy and promise, even though at its center is a recognition of mortality… making it just the right question for this season. During Lent, we are invited to reflect on our limits, our very humanness – and we are asked how we will spend the precious hours and attention we have. We are constantly aware of a hovering sense of not-enough-ness; even still, we remember Jesus’ promise of abundant life.
In our Sunday services this season, drawing from Mike Graves’ book Jesus’ Vision for Your One Wild and Precious Life: (on Things Like Poverty, Hunger, Polarization, Inclusion, and More), we’ll listen to Jesus’ dreams for his friends and for the world, draw inspiration from his wild and precious dreaming, and do what we can to nurture our own.
